I need a modbus emulator for a PC (slave) to talk to an HMI. Any suggestions?

You do not give many details but... I once did something similar where I had a VB routine behave as a ModBus Slave to a Modicon PLC doing "Report by Exception" as a ModBus Master. I used an In-Gear32 STD ActiveX & its "SlaveReg" Property which in-turn the PLC used as a ModBus register Write Command destination. It's been a while but it sounds like what you need. Good luck.

Ocean Controls sells Modbusview which can emulate a Modbus Master or Multiple slaves. Very simple to use, can do both Modbus RTU or Ascii protocol and can handle registers with integer, long and floating point values.
Goto http://www.oceancontrol.com.au

You can purchase an inexpensive Modbus Slave DLL from http://www.vhmiautomation.com

Many OPC servers now have "slave" drivers that allow the OPC server to act like a Modbus/RTU serial slave. I know www.kepware.com is one and has a demo mode you could use for a few hours. If you are comfortable setting up OPC, this would be a natural thing to try.

Also, the ModSim32 at www.win-tech.com has been in my bag of Modbus tools for over 7 years. It mimics a very simple slave - plus by opening multiple windows with different slave addresses, it can mimic an RS-485 multi-drop on a single RS-232 port. For example, I've used it in the past for customers who expect 7 motor controllers, but only have 1 to test. With some clever wiring and RS-232/485 converters they can create an RS-485 multi-drop with 7 responding slaves. Of course the 6 mimiced by ModSim just ruturn dummy data, but it allows full polling tests. Just be aware unless you pay the shareware fee, the demo time is rather short (minutes only i think).

Another is http://www.calta.com/ - I haven't used, but one of the programmers here at Digi swears by it (no, not AT it, by it!)

All 3 of these "simulators" would support Modbus/RTU on a serial port or Modbus/TCP on Ethernet.
