GE Mk VI interface to DCS on Modbus
Communications systems and equipment. topic

Can you advise me on possibility/method of connecting a DCS system to GE Mk6 using Modbus serial where the DCS shall be able to do the required DCS control/monitor functions?

My Mark V LM connected to Cimplicity HMI, the HMI then connected to serial Honeywell HPM. The serial communication use TCI modbus. The Cimplicity HMI also act as a master for taking some data from HIMA plc, use serial cimplicity.

Hope that help.

Regards,
hmp

Yes you can, if you are familiar with MK V it is not much different, RS232C over Modbus. If you need any more info, give me your Email and I can send you the relevant section of the MK VI Manual.

What do you meen by DCS?

DCS means Distributed control system. Its is state of the art technology to control almost any kind of process (chemical)through various controllers.

A set of computers along with a software are interfaced to the real time input outputs from a plant.

This is an integrated solution with various functions are done by periferals over a network
independently.

Post your email address and you will receive a copy of GEI-100517, 'MODBUS for HMI Applications.' Should answer just about all your questions. In the meantime, refer to GEI-6126, Chapter 6, the section "MODBUS Data Interface."

Hello markvguy
Would you please send me a TCI configuration information, I have a PC crashed and could not use a restore CD to get back the original configuration.
Thanks in advance

If you want to connect the MK-VI directly, you need a RS232/RS485 converter, then to DCS via RS485.

Posted by markvguy on 6 February, 2007 - 11:33 pm
Wouldn't this only be required if the DCS only had an RS-485 port?

And, can you explain "...connect the MK-VI directly,..." Do you mean through the GE Mark VI HMI or directly to a Mk VI processor or serial communications card/port?

DCS can RS232c communicate with Mk6 control panel processor using a VSCA card . But MK6 seems to be a MASTER,DCS to be a SLAVE.

There are two ways to do this. CIMPLICITY has a Modbus Slave, but so does TCI. The TCI Modbus Slave actually gets the Mark VI data from CIMPLICITY using a program called Cimmod, which will run if you select the TCI Modbus option from the CIMPLICITY workbench. This can connect from a seriaal port or over TCP/IP, depending on the configuration in io_ports.dat. TCI Modbus is quite robust, but a little tricky to configure.

in my plant, our Foxboro DCS is connected to Mark V using GE GSM protocol.

i'm sure GSM still exist for Mark VI.

The one of the ways to connect the MKVI HMI with the Foxboro DCS is by the GEGSM protocol. We are using this design in one of our project. which also works well without any problem.
