I have set up a small network of 2 socomec a20 diris multifunction meters which go through an rs485 adapter to a computer. I can see that these are communicating but can not see any voltages or actual information just hex or binary codes. Can anyone help with this please?

Modbus can used to transmit data in many formats. I suggest you review the Modbus data structure specification on modbus.org and the data presentation format of your relays.
